The Gripen doesn't have flaps (at least not trailing edge flaps). It does have leading edge flaps, but I don't think this is what you were referring to. The control surfaces at the back of the wing are elevons - they provide roll control when deflected in opposite directions and, in combination with the canards, pitch control when deflected together.
There is no flap lever in the cockpit to control either the elevons or the leading edge flaps - the pilot only has a landing gear handle. When he pulls it, the wheels are lowered and the fly-by-wire system automatically does whatever has to be done to configure the aircraft for landing. After touch-down, you will see the elevons deflect upwards to increase the download on the main wheels to improve braking. That is also done automatically, together with the downward deflection of the canard and the speed brakes. It is all transparent to the pilot - unless he looks (at the surfaces he can actually see from the cockpit) he would not even know what they were doing. |
