| | An Israeli airliner nearly collided with an Air France plane over Belgrade on Monday because of a mistake by the crew of the French jet, Serbian aviation authorities said Wednesday.
The Air France Airbus A318 and the El Al Boeing 777 missed each other by some 300 metres (1,000 feet) after the French plane "did not observe instructions from air traffic control," Serbia's Civil Aviation Directorate said in a statement quoted by Beta news agency.
"The French crew correctly repeated instructions to descend to 35,000 feet, but for still unknown reasons continued to descend the plane below the requested and approved altitude" above Belgrade, the statement said.
It added that "timely intervention by an air traffic controller" stopped the descent of the French plane and prevented a collision with the Israeli plane.
The Israeli flight was carrying 120 passengers from Tel Aviv to New York while the Air France plane was flying from Paris to Sofia. |
